How To Choose Storage Sheds

Posted by on February 9, 2012

You know the drill.

You’re not a packrat, but you have more things than you have space in your house to…well, house them. Your options are that you can give some of it away (but these are things you actually do use on a periodic basis, things like yard equipment and the like), rent a fixed storage unit near your house (but how inconvenient; you want that snowblower – you have to drive to the storage facility, portage the snowblower back to your property, use said snowblower, then pack it back up and return it to the storage facility until the next time you need it…yikes), or buy a storage shed.

Let’s say you opt for that third option; you like the simplicity and convenience of having your things on your own property, securely stored for easy access.

How do you then go about choosing a storage shed?

First, determine what you’ll be using your shed for. What are you storing in it? Yard equipment like lawnmowers and snowblowers will require more space than garden tools and extra bags of potting soil. When it comes to determining the size of the shed you want to get, think of what you’re going to want to store in it…and then go just a bit larger, to allow for future storage needs – keeping in mind whether or not your community permits sheds of that size, and whether or not you need a building permit.

Speaking of lawn equipment – if you are going to use your shed for the purposes of garaging your lawnmower or snowblower, make sure you choose a shed with wide enough doors for easy ingress and egress.

The look of the shed is important as well. Does it complement the rest of your property, or clash with it? Does the metal or vinyl-sided shed you’re considering look nice, or should you be looking at a wood shed? Remember that your shed becomes in essence an outbuilding.
